We're the police in a city where crime is bloody legal.

Sam Vimes

The City Watch, also known as simply the Watch, is an organization on BBC America's The Watch. It is a police organization within the city of Ankh-Morpork and the initials on its logo stand for Ankh-Morpork City Watch. Ostensibly, it is tasked with policing crime with the city of Ankh-Morpork. However, as crime has been legalized within Ankh-Morpork, it is said to be so named because all they can actually do is "watch."

The City Watch was founded by King Veltrick I, who was inhumed by a member of the Assassins' Guild four days after forging the first badge. A statue of him was forged and placed within the headquarters of the Assassins' Guild, used to hold the sword Gawain.

Not long as Sam Vimes became captain of the City Watch, a terrible wave of crime struck the city of Ankh-Morpork. The City Watch was overwhelmed and in the wake of it, the city's lord, Havelock Vetinari, legalized the ancient criminal guilds. The idea was that if the crime couldn't be stopped, it may as well be kept under the government's thumb. As such, crime can now be contracted out - if for example, someone wants something stolen, they contact the Thieves' Guild. Thus, The Watch's only function is to police the various guilds, only able to act against those who operate outside of those regulations. As such, its members have been reduced to a state of perpetual boredom, but things begin to change when a supposedly dead man from the past, Carcer Dun, appears and begins wreaking havoc upon the city by summoning a Noble Dragon.
