Freidegger .was a famous philosopher of the Disc and the author of Modal Contextities. His name (Frei means free in German) is a takeoff on the philosopher Martin Heidegger. His philosophy is that all freedom is limited, artificial and therefore illusory, a shared hallucination at best. No sane mortal is truly free, because true freedom is so terrible that only the mad or the divine can face it with open eyes. It overwhelms the soul, very much like the state he elsewhere describes as Vonallesvollommenunverstandlichdasdeskeit. His ideas are he opposite of the the philosopher Bouffant.

Vonallesvollommenunverstandlichdasdeskeit is a Pratchett constructed word and broken up into its German components would mean roughly "Everything stated is completely incomprehensible" - a common feeling about philosophical thought among the common people.

Freidegger is mentioned in the novel Going Postal.
