Gern is an Apprentice Embalmer at the Palace of Djelibeybi under his Master, Dil.  This young man is plump and red-faced and fancies himself as a bit of a joker. As an apprentice, however, he is developing well and has been allowed to work single-handedly on a cat. He also has a secret and shy interest in Glwenda, the daughter of a local garlic farmer.

His practical jokes are akin, in humorous content and originality, to those perpetrated by generations of medical students on the bodily parts of those who leave themselves to medical research.

The name 'Gern' is probably also not chosen at random. "Gurning" is a rustic entertainment of making strange faces and Gern certainly has an aptitude for rustic humour. 'Gern' also means "gladly' in German but equally could be a shortened form of Gherkin another word for a type of pickle and appropriate given his boss is named Dil. There is a brand of dill pickles called "Granny Gern's". Pratchett does not choose names randomly so he was likely thinking of some or all of these connections in his choice of names.  Gern's only appearance is in the novel Pyramids.
