Discworld Wiki

Mr. Tiddles is the large black and white, Post Office Cat in Ankh-Morpork. He is twenty years old which is extremely elderly in cat terms. He is so set in his ways that when Moist von Lipwig stands where Mr. Tiddles always walks on his way to his bed, he is stuck and can't make any more progress until Moist moves aside (a bit like Dr. Suess' North Going Zax and South Going Zax). He is saved from fire and Banshee by Moist, who reasons that this would look good in the paper the next day, and salvage at least something from the burning down of the Post Office.

As no definite news has reached us about any encounter with the Disc's greatest cat-lover, it must be assumed that Mr. Tiddles is still walking his time-honoured beat and sleeping in the 'in tray'.

In the Ankh-Morpork Post Office Handbook 2007, it is revealed that Mr Tiddles is the latest in a long line of Post Office cats. The original Mr Tiddles arrived on the 21st Sektober 1635 and was in residence for twenty-three years, in that time accounting for 1,137 rats, 1,563 mice and voles, 212 small birds, and one unfortunate junior postman.

Post Office Regulations demand that all kills made by Mr Tiddles are faithfully recorded, by date, time, and species, in the CatLog. This included Junior postman Trinder.

  • Mr. Tiddles shares the Post Office world of cats with Roundworld's classic British childrens' TV animation, Postman Pat, who is accompanied on his rounds by his faithful black and white cat Jess.
  • His name is an obvious reference to the Monty Python's sketch Interesting People starring Graham Chapman where Chapman tells the show's host that Tiddles flies across the room and lands in a bucket of water when really he throws Tiddles the cat across the room into the water.
  • The real Roundworld Tiddles (1970 -1983) lived in the Paddington Station ladies room and weighed over 30 pounds.
