Evadne Cake's Boarding House is one of the fixtures of Elm Street, one of the more unique areas of Ankh-Morpork where Cab drivers refuse to stop, on the grounds that the horse will be up on bricks and the shoes gone, plus the wheels, in no seconds nothing.

She provides lodgings for residents with particular needs, not surprising since her daughter is part werewolf. Famous inhabitants have included Angua von Überwald the Watch's resident werewolf, the zombie Reg Shoe and the vampires Count and Countess Notfaroutoe. By the time of Making Money she is even letting a room to Mavolio Bent, a seemingly normal human being who is arguably more frightening than any undead. Mrs. Cake is sensitive to the needs of the undead, such as the needs of some residents for a dog flap or a door handle that can be operated by a paw, the need for orthopedic gravel in the coffin and the need to leave a window open at night. Mrs. Cake is also tolerant of the eccentricities of the undead, such as carrying one's own arm until it is sewn back on.
