Night watch discworld

The Night Watch was a famous painting by Rembrandt, officially titled Militia Company of District II under the Command of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq or The Shooting Company of Frans Banning Cocq and Willem van Ruytenburch. Below is a rough comparison between the original painting, and the parody created by Paul Kidby for the cover of Night Watch.

  • Frans Banninck Cocq is replaced by John Keel (or rather, Samuel Vimes). Frans Banninck Cocq lord of Purmerland and Ilpendam (1605–1655) was a burgemeester (mayor), knight and military person of Amsterdam in the mid-17th century.
  • Willem van Ruytenburch is replaced by young Samuel Vimes. Willem van Ruytenburch, lord of Vlaardingen and Vlaardingen-Ambacht (1600–1652) was a member of the Dutch gentry and Amsterdam patriciate
  • Jan Visscher Cornelissen is replaced by Reg Shoe, waving an Ankh-Morpork flag.
  • An angel is replaced, strangely enough, by Nobby Nobbs.
  • A man holding a gun to the right of Cocq is replaced with Lu Tze and his broom.
  • Carcer Dun is shown holding two bloody knifes behind Lu Tze.
  • A man with his arm outstretched in the far right is replaced by Findthee Swing of the Particulars, whose arm is in conflict with that of Captain Tilden of the Night Watch.
  • A small dog in the centre-right is replaced by a swamp dragon.
  • The banner showing the company's colours is replaced by the Ankh-Morpork flag.
  • A young Vetinari stands to the below-left of Reg Shoe, in a grey robe.
