Nijel (also known as Nijel the Destroyer), is the son of Harebut the Provision Merchant. He is a would-be barbarian hero, appearing in Sourcery. Nijel meets Rincewind in a snake pit and they escape together. He meets Conina and they fall in love at first sight. He is a clerk who wants to be a Barbarian Hero and is currently half-way through a book on the subject, which includes a table of wandering monsters and tends to resemble a Dungeons & Dragons manual. She is a Barbarian Heroine who wants to be a Hairdresser but can't due to her genes (daughter of Cohen the Barbarian).
Nijel is six-feet plus of rippling skin and bone, possibly weighing seven stone in his loincloth. This, along with the thermal undies visible under the obligatory loincloth, (insisted on by his mother) tends to spoil the effect of a rugged barbarian hero, as does the tendency to allow his sword to stick in the ceiling when attempting a Triple Orc-Flip (reference to Chapter Seven). Indeed, his reliance on the manual, at inappropriate moments, also tends to dispel the illusion somewhat. Fortunately, just as he begins to realize that the world of the barbarian hero is not the clean and simple place he had fondly imagined when the most exciting thing in his life involved stacking crates of parsnips, he arouses Conina's protective instinct, which saves his life on numerous occasions. By the end of Sourcery, it is clear that quantum physics has obliged the couple with a private two-person universe.
- His name is an obvious play on the given name Nigel, probably one of the names least associated with superheroes and barbarians.
