Sheepridge is a small town near or in Octarine Grass Country. It is close to the Ramtops, as described in Mort. In Mort, at an apprentice fair in the town Mort is hired by Death to be his apprentice at the stroke of midnight. The town has a tavern run by the Lifton family and a smithy owned by Ned Simnel. The most impressive feature of Sheepridge is the town clock where little figures emerge to strike the hour from their little house. There is also a small cemetery, though people in these parts are so long-lived that it was said that they had to hit someone over the head with a spade before they could bury anyone. Various shops for the farming classes can be found in the main square. According to Mort, it isn't much more than "four sides to a cobbled square, lined with shops that provided all service industry of the farming industry." During the events of Reaper Man the town has some excitement when a mysterious stranger called Bill Door rides into town to take the reaping job at Miss Flitworth's farm. In Reaper Man and Raising Steam, the town appears as the home of Ned Simnel and his son Dick respectively. The Simnel family's experiments with steam are foreshadowed in Reaper Man, when Ned is trying to figure out an alternate propulsion system for his combine harvester. the kettle boils over, releasing a burst of steam as the lid is forced open... and Ned Sminel complains of 'distractions'. Little does he know that a similar contraption, but attached to wheels, would carry royalty the distance to Überwald. In Raising Steam, Dick Simnel's experiments with steam lead to the production of a steam train in Swine Town, outside Sto Lat.
